In 1787 Tōkei published Tōkei Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Tōkei). It was a two volume, woodblock-printed, picture book with thirty pictures of flowers and (or) birds. The fourteen pictures included in volume one are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Tōkei used a Chinese drawing style which aimed to capture the subject’s inner spirit rather than its external form. Consequently, neither shape nor color was true to life.
